Not in the uk, so can't speak directly to your problem, but it definitely 
sounds like you need to get the name and any required parameters for a server 
using 
authentication from your provider.  The symptoms sound exactly like the problem 
I had here in the U.S. with earthlink.  Once I switched to their smtp server 
with authentication I was able to send mail without a problem.

The trick is not just the authentication server name, but also to find out what 
specific parameters is required with the server.  In my case it was the login 
name and password so it wasn't a problem, but apparently different isp's handle 
this in slightly different ways so it's a good idea to check it out.
