Ben,

Are you absolutely sure the port isn't actually being used by some other 
program?  For example, if activesync is on your system, make sure that the 
program 
isn't checking your serial port for a connection.  You can find this in the 
connection settings of activesync and it's the first checkbox and should be 
unchecked.

Also, it's not a bad idea to completely reboot the pc just to make sure the 
port is somehow not being used by another program.  Even when you shut down 
that other program, the port isn't always freed up.

Also, you might want to try a regular reset of the bn when you reboot the pc.  

If the port is somehow in use, the jfw drivers won't load correctly.
