With the PK, I have experimented both ways. I can send first, or I can 
receive first,  or do both with no problem so far.

I have found with my BN BT, I need to receive email first before the unit 
can properly send my email.  Sometimes I can simply send my email but other 
times, I cannot.  This has something to do with verification on your isp.
