Hi, thanks for everybody's help. I now can get the word count with 
read+control+I. I'm not sure why the manual tells me to do space+I when this 
doesn't work on a qwerty keyboard.

The Word Count utility wasn't implemented until v5.1, so you wouldn't have 
it with v4.2.  In your case, [SPACE with I], [READ with CONTROL with I] will 
just produce the file name, while in v5.1, this command lands you in an 
"Information Menu" from which you can choose to hear the file name or 
perform a Word Count.
