Hello Al,
Although I don't have cable, I know that a router is a safety device as
well. Usually it has four ports and each one must be configured
individually. You will need two ports configured. One for your pc and one
for your PK. You probably want to look for an 802.11G compatible router.
You have 802.11b compatibility on your PK. the 802.11g is backwards
compatible with the 802.11B.
If you have a router, it's harder for people to break in to your system. A
router has separate security levels for the different ports. Some of this
security runs in bhe background as a second program. but if you're quite a
distance from others, you may not need the higher security levels.
I have a number of friends who have routers but they can't tell me much
about them. they usually had someone else set them up. so you might want
to go to Compusa and talk to the guys there. Or to the Micro Center. You
should be able to get excellent help at either place. You just need to
know what you have and what you want to do. You could probably get your
son to assist with this.
I hope this helps some.
Isaac
