Hi Every"one, These are my thoughts on the subject of the Nemeth Code compchtou Braille topic. I started learning Nemeth Code when I was in lower elementary school so maybe like first grade second grade. By sixth grade I was using the Braille 'n Speak to do my homework which included math. I remember being constantly confused when I was supposed to use Nemeth code and when I could use computer Braille. I was constantly having switching to one or the other code and having to spell out words. It was a constant battle because just because something looked great in Braille it wouldn't look good in print. I am so glad I have virtuually nothing to do with math anymore. For those who are interested you can purchase a reference card for the Nemeth Code from National Braille Press. Their web site is www.nbp.org
I do wish there was some way all the Braille codes could be used flawlessly within any electronic notetaker basically any device where Braille is inputed. Of course the next thing the Braille readers and notetakers will have to deal with is BANA and whatever changes they bring about to the Braille codes. I wish Braille could be more uniform somehow. I don't really mind the Nemeth code if I can use the Perkins for working out problems but to get Nemeth code from an electronic notetaker into print is a frustrating process. I do have to admit I have not tried much with Nemeth code on the BN or printing in Nemeth code with the BN. I don't want to think about it. With the Braille 'n Speak it was good about figuring out if I was writing in computer Braille or Nemeth code. I never had to indicate which code I was writing in. It was just always frustrating to me that I had to spell words out on my math assignments when if I used the Perkins then those words could have been w! ritten in contracted Braille. I wish there was some type of formating that would work just for files in Nemeth Code so they would translate okay to print. I have always had problems with math and dealing with these Braille issues I think increased my frustrational level. I hope this makes sense. Lisa
