Hi riana,

KeySoft 5.1 with the existing Internet Explorer 4.01-based KeyWeb already
lets you browse FTP sites, in passive mode. Listings are displayed in
HTML as web pages, and transactions are all done without a permanent
connection to the host. Files can be retrieved already simply by
specifying the URL. To get a listing for a certain host, specify that
host and path in the URL. You must supply the "ftp://"; prefix. The
authentication hack is supported. For instance, if I want the contents of
the /agrip/accessiblequake/ directory at host agrip.org.uk and want to log
on as anonymous:
ftp://agrip.org.uk/agrip/accessiblequake/

If I wanted to log on to oblique.agrip.org.uk with username fu and
password bar and change to the /home/fu/private directory:
ftp://fu:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/home/fu/private/

Sending files (put) is not supported. Gopher is not supported (and likely
never will be). FTP URLs are sent to your HTTP proxy, if configured; if
Squid is the proxy server, it will do a similar thing as the BrailleNote,
only in a much less broken fashion (IE4 is awful). Whether or not a full
FTP client is really required, I'm not sure - but I suppose if the
BrailleNote is going to do FTP at all, it might as well do it properly.
IE6 has a full, if stupidly simplistic, FTP client that maintains
persistent sessions and works in active mode. It uses an explorer-like
interface.

Cheers,
