Oh no Mary Ellen! The same exact thing happened to me in late December, new
year's eve to be exact... precisely a week and a half before midterms.
Yikes! It, like yours, continued to make the slight buzzing noise audible
when the unit was turned on, but absolutely nothing happened.

I sent it back and got it exactly two days before exams started (needless to
say I had no life for that time), and though I was never given a very
explicit reason why this might occur, one suggested one was that it may have
been due to my flash card being inserted when turning on the unit. I don't
know how valid this is, and I don't know if this was your case, but it was
just one of many things which convinced me to remove all removable storage
before powering on.
