Hi, Reggie and others.
I had the same problems that Reggie is having with her Braillenote. I asked
the powers that be, in New Zealand about it, and here was their explanation
and why, and I can share what I do to cut down on the amount of frustrating
truncations.
First off, my problem had to do with .rtf files, and the reason they would
crash so often is there are a lot of things in that "rich" part of RTF. If
you mess with enough of these markers, which indicate, italics, bold,
spacing, and other delightful things the braillenote gives up and eats the
file.
I haven't had this happen with plain text, but I suspect it could happen.
So what to do about it.
Here is how I edit a large file on the BN and have done up to 800 pages or
more.
1. Open the .rtf or .txt file. Start to edit.
2. When I exit, and it asks me to save as a Keyword I say yes.
3. Open the keyword file, which is more stable, and continue to edit as I
go, saving often.
4. When I am done editing the file, making changes and all the other fun
things, I go to
File manager, translation menu, export document.
And export it, out as either a .rtf or a .txt file.
Now, what happens you ask if for example you wanted it to stay a .rtf and it
refuses to come back out as one. Then I will export it as a text file, open
MS Word, and save it as a .rtf, which maintains page breaks.
The formatting changes in this process, honestly since version 5 have not
been too big. Perhaps extra lines here and there, but in the wide scheme of
things, the improved text is more important.
And with Bookshare conversions tools doing what they do, well, smile.
But this is how I have gotten around the truncation problem. This also
saves me time as I don't have to make back up copies of files every time I
save just in case perhaps it might be truncated down the road.
I have a Braillenote QT, so perhaps the BT has something to do with the
formatting issues.
But this might work nicely for you.
