Hi, Lisa.  I had the same problem, and it cost me about fifteen hundred dollars 
to fix.  The back pannels that control the braille cells were all damaged.  I 
was told that if I had sent the unit in when the problems first appeared, 
instead of forcing it to partly work via various resets, battery draining, and 
sometimes kicking the unit just right, I probably would have only needed to 
replace one back pannel instead of four.
Sometimes, half the cells would work, and the other half would contain 
gibberish.  Sometimes I got the "display not operating" msg..
Send it in! It won't cost as much as a new BN, and the sooner you get it 
repaired, the less damage you may have to pay for.
