The fonts available with the VN and BN depend on what printer you have set
up. Even if you don't plan to print anything with your VN, you will need to
pretend you will and set it up so the fonts connected with that printer will
work.

For example, mine is set up to work with the HP DeskJet and Laserjet
printers. The drivers are loaded and the fonts will work.

If you go through the alphabet and press a letter, you should hear, "bold"
for b, "underline" for u, etc.

To set up the VN to be used with a printer, press p for print, s for setup
printer. You are now at the printer setup list. Use the space bar to cycle
through the list until you get to "printer type." Press the letter y and
press enter if you want to change the default setting. A list of printers
will appear. Cycle through the list until you come to the one you want and
press enter. You are now at the next choice in the printer setup list.
Press the space bar to get to the end of the list. Press the escape key and
answer y to confirm the changes and save the settings.

If you want lots of fonts to work for you, but you don't plan to print
anything, choose a printer such as the LaserJet. The default printer
doesn't offer any fonts at all.

Fonts are mainly for the benefit of sighted people who are reading something
on paper. They like the visual effects of how the print looks.

The VN and BN do not support much of the fancy stuff sighted people use with
Word or WordPerfect. If you are writing something for a sighted person who
requires graphics and other fancy fonts and styles, you will need to use
Word or WordPerfect on your PC to add the extra doodads. But if the sighted
person doesn't care about graphics and other fancy stuff, then the VN and BN
will do fine. Fortunately for me, I don't have to make fancy print
documents, so I don't worry about fonts or styles. But students and
secretaries an others of you who are required to create fancy fonts will
have to learn how to make the documents appear the way your sighted readers
want them to look.

Most printers won't work with the VN or BN, so you may have to use a PC to
print the documents. But you can certainly use the BN to create the drafts
and you can email documents to sighted people and they could print them when
they receive them.

Subject: [Braillenote] the font comand

: Hi,
: I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on how to use the
font command. I've found next to nothing on this subject in my user manual.
: On my voicenote, the font command is the control-t key combination.
: I've tried hitting each letter just to see what it would do but aside from
"underline" and "overstrike" none of the letters appear to have any effect.
:
: Basically I would like to know how, when and where I can use this command.
:
: Thanks in advance
