How easy are they to find chapters and verses in at short notice? 
Easy, as soon as you are familiar with the type of lay-out.  Then just
search with the find command.

What is it like to read, and can one cross-reference with it, or at
least, create footnotes etc?
I use a vn so cannot comment on the Braille reading part, but the speech
is acceptable and you shouldn't have a problem if you're used to reading
books.  You will be able to create your own foot notes and comments, but
you would then use keyword to do that, because when you read with the
book reader, the file is automatically protected.  However, you could
off course make the alterations you wish from keyword and then use the
book reader to read, which will ensure that you do not accidentally make
changes.
