Hi, Penny: Welcome to this great list.
The reason for draining the battery now and then is to keep the gauge accurate. It has no benefit to the battery itself, but keeps the gauge accurate so you know how much power and things you actually have. Actually, most people on the list probably don't have the upgrade. From what I understand, yes, you can definitely go wireless.
