Yes Ma'am, Eloquence for JAWS is the default. Should have said that.

Uh, I assume Eloquence is the default thing that's checked when you
9instal JAWS and don't put in your own synthesizer? Thanks for
clarifying, BTW.

Okay, Jane, I asked the guy in the next office, who is our resident JAWS
expert. If you press Control-Insert-S, you are in a list of
synthesizers; one choice is "no speech." If you choose that, Eloquence
or whatever you are using will stop talking. Then when you want it to
start talking again, press Control-Insert-S, then E for Eloquence, and
your speech will come back. I tried this; it worked (finally.)

You missed what I said earlier. :) My speakers are unplugged because at
the moment I am using a headset with a microphone that doesn't have a
volume control on it.

Jane, you're making this harder than it needs to be. When you want just
Braille, turn the speaker volume all the way down; all the speakers I
know have a volume control. Then when you want the Braille to go away,
turn the sound back up and turn off the BrailleNote. JAWS might
complain; you may have to unload and restart JAWS if you do this. I
wouldn't mess around with putting JAWS to sleep unless you are sure you
are the handsome prince (grin)

Well, speakers are unplugged, and I have a mic and headphone set but no
volume, so I'll need to know how to do that, but then wake it up again
when I want to use the voice and no Braille.

Hi,
You will need to modify your Jaws and add the BrailleNote as a Braille
display. I like to silence the screen reader voice by either turning
down the volume or unplugging the speakers or headphones. If this won't
work for you, there is a way to put Jaws to sleep without losing
Braille, but someone who knows more than I do will have to answer that
one.

How can I set this up with JAWS 6.0? Also, is there a way to make JAWS
not talk when I have the BrailleNote hooked up as a Braille display?

I did the same thing with Jaws 3 years ago. The BN does, indeed, make
an excellent Braille display, regardless of one's choice in screen
readers.

Dear List,

I did something which I found to be exciting. I use my BN as a braille
display with WindowEyes. I wanted to scroll up and down a document by
paragraph using the thumb keys. I looked at the braille hot keys and I
decided to change two of them. I changed thumb 2 and 3 to control down
arrow and thumb 1 and 4 to control up arrow. The new hot keys work
beautifully! Now, I can scroll through a document paragraph by
paragraph using the thumb keys!

The BN and WE make a great combination!
