Australia's Thorpe beats USA's Phelps in 200-meter freestyle -
Ian Thorpe of Australia won the gold medal Monday in the 200-meter freestyle in an
Olympic-record time of 1:44.71. Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands took the
silver and American Michael Phelps won the bronze.
