If it overheated there is a thermal fuse on the top of the brew boiler.

The brew and steam boilers are both powered off the p-stat. When the 
steam boiler is under the p-stat set point the steam boiler is heated 
and the red light below the hot water wand comes on. When there is 
enough pressure for steam the p-stat redirects the power to the brew 
boiler and if the thep controller says it needs heat, the brew heater 
is turned on.

So the problem could be:

bad p-stat
bad temp controller
bad brew boiler heating element
bad over temp switch on the top of the boiler
burnt wire somewhere

I don't think it can be anything else.

I was at home depot and discovered that for about $9 you can buy a 
perfectly good heater for an espresso machine. Might not fit the 
Brewtus, but it does make the question of  where to get an element 
for a home built machine a bit simpler.
