Refitting the plastic tube with the loop sticking upwards sounds like a good idea. I never thought of a simple fix like that. What I have done on mine is put a length of black plastic automotive wire loom over the tube for an extra surface to take any abrasion. It is slit up the side for easy install, and it is ridged for bending around corners or loops. Just a scrap I had laying around from an auto stereo install. One could slit some vinyl tube and cover the plastic pipe with it, also.
