I have an In-Sink-Erator insta-hot installed at my house. I filter it
with a GE system (their high-end home user filter, two elements). I
keep it at the highest setting, which occasionally boils here at sea
level, but normally it dispenses around 208F. This unit dispenses hot
or cold, and it is what I use to fill my Brewtus.

Anyway, it's been in continuous service (day and night) for just over
three years. The element in it is installed at the bottom front, and
just started leaking today. I convinced ISE to send me a new one
(warranty is three years, and I'm at 3 years, 2 months), so I took the
opportunity to see what a boiler looks like after three years in my
home, with my water and conditions. I think this would be similar to
both the steam and brew boilers on the Brewtus, except that it's
stainless steel instead of copper. Obviously the water gets turned
over regularly, like the brew boiler, and the heat is high, like the
steam boiler.

When I opened it up, I was pleasantly surprised. We have medium hard
water, and alkaline (pH 8.2-8.3 usually). There were definitely
minerals in there, but they were all in the form of sediment, and
there was no scale line on the tank whatsoever. In a 2.5 liter tank,
I'd guess I had maybe 1-2 tablespoons of sediment, and that was it.

So, I'll keep descaling my Brewtus, but I feel a lot better about what
I can't see after getting to see the inside of this unit. I suppose
the copper in the Brewt is more susceptible to attack from the
minerals, but not being a chemist, I'm not sure.

The sediment was also fine flakes, and light weight. I wonder if it
would make sense to shake the Brewt a bit before I flush the steam
boiler, to put that sediment into solution and try to get some of it
flushed out.

tx,
bmc
