There are two valves on the steam boiler that could be causing this.  The one 
near the back of the boiler is the vacum relief valve. Over time that can get a 
scale build up on the seal which will cause them to spurt now and then.  A 
cleaning or replacement will take care of that.  The valve near the center is 
the pressure relief valve and if that is the one that is relesing the pressure 
then yes, a new pressurstat is the way to go.  If it is the pressure-stat then 
your the steam boiler pressure gauge should be reading above normal during the
