The brew boiler generally does not scale much because as much water comes in as goes out and the water is below boiling. The steam boiler scales because all the steam leaves as distilled water and all of its minerals remain behind.
I've just filled the steam boiler with white vinegar from the reservoir: Let the machine heat up and then turn it off and open the hot water tap. After it stops draining, close the tap and turn the machine back on and it will pull the descaling solution from your container of choice.
Let the machine heat up and after 1/2 hour or so turn it off and open the hot water valve and let all the solution out. Repeat a few times until the vinegar smell goes away.
Is it as good as opening it up, no, but unless the mushroom indicates you need to descale the brew side, that's all you have to do.
Descaling the brew side likely requires you be able to turn the boiler upside down, or that you have a pump with a hose small enough to fit in one of the fittings on the top.
