The merging has the perhaps negative sideefect that the user no longer can choose at runtime if the bridge should be netfilter integrated or not, only at build time. I cannot make up my mind on what is worst, not giving that choice at runtime, or the confusion from having to load the module, but I think I agree that it is a good move forward.
