Hi folks

First of all, hallo to everyone and apologies for the long post. A brief
intro - I work for a small web development company in Sussex, England. We
are in the (gradual) process of moving from NT based solutions to Linux. We
already use Linux w. sendmail/qpopper to provide mail services and we are
moving our web software from ASP/SQL Server to ASP/PHP/MySQL/PostGreSQL.

I've got a minimal rh7.1 system which I want to make into a bridge (with
ipchains) to protect an NT Web server and various other stuff. I've
downloaded and read the instructions and installed the bridge utilities at
bridge.sourceforge.net.

Kernel 2.4.2 w. bridge module inserted.

(first brought down all interfaces, btw)

1. brctl addbr br0
2. brctl addif br0 eth0
3. brctl addif br0 eth1
4. ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0
5. ifconfig eth1 0.0.0.0
6. ifconfig br0 up

Ipchains is set to accept everything on input, output and forward chains.
cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward shows 1

I haven't set up an IP on br0 as I have console access.

The problem:
Only one of the interfaces shows a link. If I plug a hub into eth0 (3Com
3C509 Etherlink III ISA) and
another into eth1 (SMC PCI), I only get a link on the interface going to one
hub.
Swapping the cables over swaps the link over too. Also I know that both
hubs are working as removing the bridge machine, results in traffic flowing
happily once more.

The current setup is :-

Main Hub ------> Secondary Hub ---> PCs

I want to do:

Main Hub ---> Bridge ---> Secondary Hub--->PCs

What have I missed ???

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Ronan
