You need to apply the patches that are not in your kernel yet.  So if
you are using the 2.4.16 kernel as a base, you would need the patches marked
with '2.4.17' and 'submitted'.  If you use 2.4.10, you need '2.4.12', '2.4.13',
'2.4.15', '2.4.17' and 'submitted'.  Et cetera.

(I did it this way because some people, especially from the far east it
seems, have this natural urge to use old kernel versions for some reason,
and subsequently complain to me if it breaks.)

Not really; you would have to add the patch before you build the RPM,
which involves hacking .spec files and such.  Why don't you just use the
provided RPM?
