This is how I bring up my bridge:

brctl addbr br0
brctl addif eth0
brctl addif eth1
brctl stp br0 off

ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0
ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1

Straight out of the HOWTO in the docs directory.
