I looked through the archives (quickly), but didn't see anything
related, so hopefully this isn't old hat.

I noticed that the bridge code picks the numerically lowest interface
mac address as its own address. I was hoping someone could explain why.
The reason that I ask is that I have a removable card as part of a
bridge and if it gets removed or restarted it can cause the bridge's
advertised mac address to 'flutter' and causes problems downstream with
cached arp entries for the bridge interface until the entries time out.
I am curious if doing something like using the address of the first
interface in the list would work just as well, or perhaps support
SIOCSIFHWADDR and lock that address onto the bridge device until it is
reset with another SIOCSIFHWADDR call?

        thanks
        david
