Hi,

I've been testing out my shiny new (well not so new now) Linux box with and
without bridging code enabled and
bench marking it against my Windows 98 PC.

I originally had problems with Cards/Drivers that impacted performance ...

Realtek cards - real problems with bridging, as my speed dropped to
30Kb/sec.
3Com cards - nice cards, bad driver - solved this by using Donald Beckers
version of driver.

I am now using 3Com 3c905B/C cards in my bridge, and performance seems a lot
better, but .....

I have found that my Windoze box can transfer data faster to/from the
internet than my Linux box !
Both machines are currently connected to the same Switch through an ADSL
modem to the internet.

I must point out that I'm not testing like-for-like hardware, but my
expectation was that Linux would perform as well as Win98 if not better. In
my opinion, my Linux box has better quality hardware.

I would appreciate anyone's views on this - as my intention is the Linux to
become the main route to the internet.
Oh, BTW I found that the bridge does not add any additional latency, which
is nice !

Thanks,

Simon.

Windows config:

Win98 running on AMD/700 Mhz, 128Mb Ram, FA311 network card.

Linux config:

Kernel 2.4.18 running on intel PII/300Mhz, 128Mb Ram, 3Com 3c905 network
card.
(Donald becker network drivers, not broken 3Com ones)
Note: System not loaded at all - load = 0.1.

Tests:

When testing Linux, I took bridge down.

1. When I test the transfer rate between the two machines through the Switch
I get a rate of
7000Kb/sec (using FTP) I only get this rate once the file to be transferred
is cached in memory by Linux, otherwise I am restricted by the IDE load
time. Test file was ~ 18Mb.

2. When I test a 300MB ftp download, for example from oracle.co.uk:
Win98 = 58.5Kb/sec
Linux = 57.0Kb/sec

3. Pointed by browser at www.bandwidth.com/speedtest the tests produce:
Win98 = 58.8Kb/sec
Linux = 57.9Kb/sec

Now I know there is not much difference between them, but there is a
difference none the less
- a whole 1Kb/sec ! (:->
