I know I get those types of messages (and some iptables messages) on my screen when I shut down. I assume that this is because syslogd has already stopped, and then the messages were generated and had to go somewhere...

Couldn't it also be his syslogd? I know I had to upgrade mine for a
different package that was doing the same. Just another avenue to check if
the former doesn't work.
