iup i tried that already
the top of my init script looks like this

/usr/sbin/hdparm -c 1 -d 1 /dev/hda

/usr/local/sbin/brctl addbr br0
/usr/local/sbin/brctl stp br0 off


echo '65535' > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_conntrack_max
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/proxy_arp
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

now the "proxy_arp" line is new i saw it in one example  
unfortunatly i can't benchmark it right now. i will do it as soon as possible
because i don't now if it makes any diference, i am just guessing.

i am adding the contens of my /proc/sys/net/ipv4 , so if anyone sees anything 
that should be different let me know:
