hello.

i have been playing/learing about bridging. i had set up an old laptop
running a kernel 2.4.20 with the appropriate ebtables patch as a bridge.

everying was going fine. i configured the bridge/routes, wrote a startup
script, filled in iptables appropriately, and it worked. i could connect
across it, ssh into it from the internal net, just as expected.

anyway, one day i lost my link to the world. so i turned everthing off
until the cable company came out and reconnected me. then, i turned
everything on, and nothing.

the bridge, would not let any traffic through. i could ssh to the bridge,
but i could not connect from one side to the other. the iptables, ifconfig,
routes were all unchanged. when i removed the bridge, everything worked
fine.

after some trial and error, this is what i found.
IF i reboot the bridge when i have the interface cables connected to the
network and external gw, then NOTHING gets through the bridge (except ssh to
the bridge from internal net).
IF i reboot the bridge when it is NOT CONNECTED TO ANYTHING, wait for it to
go through and set up the bridge ports, and THEN CONNECT IT, everything
works fine.

i have been unable to find any info about this, but then again, i am not
even sure what keywords i should use when searching.

any ideas?

thanks in advance - ted

PS: my setup is :

internal net hub -------> bridge --------> external
   --------->   Ineternet
10.0.28.0/24 10.0.28.9 10.0.28.1/dhcp
                                   (just for fun)
