I'm hardly the right person to be answering this, as I don't have any
wireless equipment. But I'm looking into getting some and I've read that
the exact thing you're trying to do doesn't work because of some quirk
of how wlan works. iirc, some form of translation is needed between the
802.11b and the standard ether net, and the bridge driver doesn't know
anything about it.

i think you're trying to build what's called an access point with a
standard wlan card. http://hostap.epitest.fi/ purports to do this.
