Hi My department has recently installed a bridge/firewall with gigabit ethernet. We went with a motherboard with lots of I/O bandwidth and room for upgrade. So far the bridge/firewall is running smoothly . System: Motherboard: Intel Server board SE7500CW2 CPU: 1 Xeon 2.0 GHz, 512k cache ETHERNET: 2 Intel Pro/1000 XF fiber adapter http://www.intel.com/design/servers/SE7500CW2/index.htm http://intel.com/network/connectivity/products/pro1000xf_server_adapter.htm We had the best luck with the Linux kernel on the Intel web site: http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/se7500cw2/dma.htm The fiber ethernet cards are the most expensive item in the system. If you can go with an Intel copper ethernet card then you can put together a system at a reasonable cost. The newest e1000 driver from Intel works fine but I am not sure if it will have problems as we approach 20,000 to 30,000 interrupts/sec. We may have to look at the NAPI net driver . peterp Peter Pereira Computer Systems Coordinator Dept. of Electrical and Computer Eng.
