Does anyone here know enough about squirrel behavior to tell me what it
means when a squirrel is lashing its tail about furiously?

We have at least one squirrel that frequents our backyard, and who seems
to be smart enough to not get caught by our dogs. I don't know if it was
our usual squirrel (who often comes down from the trees to take advantage
of the dogs' outdoor water dish when they're inside), but *some* squirrel
did something near the dining room window to make enough noise for me to
notice from the livingroom. I got up to look, saw it in the yard slowly
making its way toward the porch, went from the dining room through the
kitchen to sit down in the breakfast nook and watch. It never came down
onto the floor of the porch, but climbed up into a tree and went from
branch to branch, tree to tree, flicking its tail so furiously that if it
had been a cat, I'd have been tempted to flee the county. Was it angry?
Defensive? Anyone know?

I think it wasn't our usual, because I see another squirrel (tail looks a
little different, for one thing) behaving like our usual squirrel, on the
porch railing. Maybe the one was invading the other's space?

who would much rather have squirrels coming to use the dogs' water than
birds, because the squirrel isn't going to poop all over the water dish
and the deck
