It was, and no, they don't talk about nukes. The planes were F-80 Shooting
Stars armed with 3.5 inch rockets and napalm.

What I wondered about the phone call was the conversation. State Trooper:
Is this the local air force base? Let me speak to the CO...Sir, a giant
tarantula is heading for our town. Can you scramble some jets and attack
it? Base Commander: What! Are you !@#*&^% nuts?! (slams down the phone)
But in the movie the Base Commander probably answered: Sure, they're on the
way. (he turns to his aide), Bob, scramble the alert 5 jets, and tell them
to initiate Attack Plan Giant Tarantula.
