I've often wondered about that too.  I don't think it would ever affect stop
me from going and voting.  There's always something else going on that I'm
interested in casting my ballot for.  (This year it was the governor's race
and the dead guy vs. live guy thing.)  But I can see how it might affect
someone who was only marginally-likely to vote in the first place.  However,
I don't understand why it would necessarily affect one side or the other.

I can see the following possibilities of an early call for Gore:

1.  Bush supporter votes for Bush anyway
2.  Gore supporter votes for Gore anyway
3.  Bush supporter goes home without voting
4.  Gore supporter goes home without voting.
5.  Nader/Gore leaner decides that his vote doesn't matter and votes for
Nader instead of Gore.

Why would #3 be more likely then #4?  Wouldn't #3 and #4 sort of cancel each
other out?
