This is not an advertisement, just wanted to share information with fellow
list members that may be interested in trying their hand at domains and/or
websites....
If anyone knows of any similar services (I am sure that there are many out
there) , please respond to the list or to me directly if you prefer. I am
making a resource page with this information.
There is an online company called Namezero that will allow you to reserve a
domain name of your choice (assuming that domain is available) for free. The
do not do web hosting, but they do offer URL redirecting and email
forwarding. If you are not sure what redirecting is, here is the five cent
explanation....
I reserved the domain name www.newpacifica.net . Namezero reserves that
name, and redirects any traffic to that URL to any web address that I
specify. I went out and found free web hosting and put my website there.
Namezero redirects that URL to the website and opens a transparent frame and
the only URL that you see is http://www.newpacifica.net.
I also like the email forwarding that they offer. For example I have an
email address (that I don't use yet) of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Namezero
receives the email and automatically forwards it on to my normal email
account.
The downside of this is that I personally hate frames (even if they are
transparent) and they do put a small banner at the bottom of the browser
window. I was able to bypass the banner by pointing any links on the index
page to a new browser window. But of course, you lose the transparent frame
that keeps your URL in place and you will see the actual URL of the web
page.
They do have a premium service for $24.95 a year that allows you to remove
the advertising banner permanently.
Most free web page hosts I have ran across put some type of advertisement
banner on the page as you open it up. Some you can close, some you can not
close.
I found a web host that will allow you to have up to 20 MB of free space
with no advertisement, support front page extensions, offers free web stats,
and an integrated search engine. they are: www.f2s.com You can sign up for
your free space and sub domain at http://www.f2s.com/free/free%20home.htm
They are based in the UK, and I have found them to be reliable and fast.
If you don't want to hassle with the domain name at Namezero, you can always
just go to the F2S website and have a sub domain. My actual web page is at:
www.newpacifica.f2s.com with Namezero redirecting it from
www.newpacifica.net. But you could just as easily only use the sub domain
offered by F2S.
If this interests anyone but you are not completely sure that you understand
the information above, don't be embarrassed to ask. If I can't answer the
question clearly (or accurately), then I am sure that there are other list
members that can.
Again, this is not an advertisement, nor do I get any type of referral
reward. I just wanted to share this information with anyone on the list that
might be interested in trying their hand at a domain name or web site
without spending any money.
