Really?  The 1978 film,by any chance?  That was a good an adaptation of the
book as one could have hoped for, I thought.

Yep, the 1978 animated film.  I don't think there's been any remake efforts.  
I wanted to get it on DVD or LaserDisc so it would last longer and for better
quality, but it hasn't been released on DVD yet, and LaserDiscs are
increasingly more difficult to find these days now that DVDs are replacing
them.  As soon as I get a DVD player (read Playstation 2) I will probably buy
The Secret of NIMH.  Those two movies were my favorite animated films as a
child, and I am calling upon them now for inspiration in my animation efforts.
