I've only read the first book, but when I saw a Guild Steersman on
the miniseries, I went to check Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials.
The Guide says Barlowe got the description from Dune Messiah,
and his looked like the one in the miniseries, so it looks like the
people behind the miniseries read the later books, so they could
stay consistent. The miniseries people also thought of something
Barlowe didn't: their Steersman had Fremen-blue eyes, which makes
sense, because of the massive amounts of spice they must use.
BTW, the miniseries Steersman looked a lot better than the
spongy, anus-mouthed manatees in the David Lynch movie. ;-)
