Well, it was a prequel to FutD, but Vinge isn't that widely read, so he has to make 
the book stand alone - the result is a lot of time defining how he came to be who he 
is. Also, Nau's opinion of Nuwen is very important in shaping events, so we need to 
know some of the reason for that too.
Don't forget his intention for Focus for most of the book removes some of the heroic 
status (I think that doesn't give anything away unless you've read it?, my apologies 
if it did)
Overall, I liked it. The anthropomorphising of the spiders is in large part because 
Sherkaner has goals which are so similar to our own, rather than because all spiders 
are human-like.
