I have just created the brinl1 game.

All listmembers are invited to participate; if, after one
week, there aren't 7 (seven) players from the list, I will
open the game to everybody else. If there are more players
than 7, I will open another game.

The announcement of the game is:

> This game is a gunboat game to introduce the members of the
> Brin-l mailing list to the hobby of diplomacy by e-mail.
> Players are encouraged to roleplay races and characters from
> David Brin's Uplift novels.
>
> My suggestion is that each country should be roleplayed by a
> different race, according to the list E = Earthlings, F =
> Jophur, G = Gubru, I = Thenannin, R = Soro, T = Tandu, A = any
> other. In this way, I hope to preserve good feelings, because
> you will not be stabbed by "Alberto, my trustful friend" but by
> "The Suzerain of Beam and Talon, that bloodthirsty bird".
>
> The use of such races, names, etc, is strictly for informal use
> by amateurs with no financial transactions involved; such rights
> of use are provisional and may be revoked at any time. All
> copyrights and trademarks, including "Uplift", "Startide" and
> other terms in the Uplift Universe by David Brin are reserved by
> David Brin.

There is a two-step procedure to join the game:

Step 0: you must know the rules of Diplomacy :-)

Step 1: you must register with the "judge". This judge is
an e-mail robot that will handle the bureaucratic part of
the game (receive moves, process turns, etc). In order to
register, you must send an e-mail message to the judge:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

whose *body* must be like (change for your name, etc):

REGISTER
Name: Aretha Holly
Phone: (505) 555-5555
Site: University of Hodunk
Address: 1515 St. Claws Lane, Kris Mass
Country: USA
Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], host2!host1!user
Level: Novice, Intermediate or Expert
Birthdate: Dec 25, 1907
Sex: Female
END

This information will become public to all those that know
your e-mail, so if you want to preserve privacy, you may
fake all information except email (put here a list as long as
possible; you might need to send from some other place in an
emergency; the return address will *always* be the first)
and level (you are all Novice :-))

Step 2: ** after ** the register was sent (the judge replies
if there is any error), send another e-mail to the judge with
the lines:

signon ?brinl1 <password> standard gunboat
set preference AEFGIRT

Replace <password> by something simple to remember; I may
override a password in case you forget.

Replace AEFGIRT by your list of preferences; for example,
if you want to play Germany but doesn't care for any other
nation, send "set preference G".

Alternate Step 2: if you just want to take a peek at
the game, and eventually say something to annoy the players
(there is an option to do it anonymously), you may sign
as an *observer*. Just send:

observe brinl1 <password>

While we wait for 7 players to signon, I will keep sending
"tutorials" to the list; after that, I will use the judge
to do it. Those who want to step ahead might read the
cryptic judge help files, that you get by sending "help"
to the judge.
