Well, if we're on the subject of wicked fast electronic devices, my friend 
Bendik Kleveland build the fastest CPU ever (although heaven knows someone 
may have already beaten it, given how fast the industry moves).  See 
http://holst.stanford.edu/~bendik/ for some info about his work at 
Stanford.  He was one of Intel's CPU designers earlier.  I can remember 
when he was telling me that it wasn't clear if they could ever make a chip 
faster than 1 GHz -- boy, is that ancient history now.  I think he built a 
chip that ran at something like 30 GHz for his Ph.D.
