Wow, the list has been quiet.
I recently contacted David Brin. He asked me to sends his best wishes to
everyone on the list.
I had a strange dream a few days ago regarding Startide Rising... normally, I
would just write off such dreams, but the interpretion of the dream was quite
distressing to me, so I contacted David Brin. He informed me that Paramount
had very recently chosen not to renew the Startide Rising option.
My commentary on this: in all likelyhood, this means Paramount has abandoned
the project. I am not surprised by this, Startide would require much more
computer generated characters than Paramount has ever done in a film (they
may have a nack for ships and effects, but they lack experience with computer
generated organic creatures). If the rumor mill is accurate, Sony pictures
may pick up the option. Rumor has it that the director from paramount
interested in Startide switched studios and now works for Sony Pictures, so
now that Paramount abandoned the Startide option, Sony may pick it up. Many
here already know that Square Pictures (of Square USA) with Columbia Pictures
(a subsidary of Sony Pictures) are responsible for the production of the
Final Fantasy computer animated film that will be released in the summer of
2001. If any studio can produce a good representation of Startide Rising,
Sony ca!

n, and if the Final Fantasy movie is any indication, they are not
afraid to step outside the boundries of traditional Hollywood film making.
Happy holidays everyone.
