Legal size envelope? As in, big enough for a 8 1/2 X 14 inch piece of
paper to be inserted without folding? Probably under an ounce, BUT,
for anything bigger than a certain size envelope (and I think it's a #10
envelope), you have to pay extra for it being oversize if it's 1 ounce or
less. If you still have some stamps from before the rate change earlier
this month, you'll be quite safe if you put 2 of them on; or if you have
a stamp for the old 2-ounce rate (i.e., $0.55), one of those will do
nicely. I'm not sure just how the new rates work out, but previously, the
extra charge for "oversize" envelope of an ounce or less was something
like $0.10 or so.
OK, I went to http://www.usps.com/ and went to the rate calculator, and
you should be OK with $0.45 in postage. If you want to play it safe and
assume it's over 1 ounce (I'm sure it'll be less than 2 ounces!),
apparently the 2-ounce rate is still $0.55, and that will cover it for
sure. (They don't do that surcharge for it being larger if it's over an
ounce, but they sure do it for anything under an ounce.)
