I've wondered the same thing myself. I can't answer the question about
the safety of the food, but we definitely have people who buy directly
from the farmers. They usually call them "Farmer's Markets". There will
be a place where several farmers will bring their goods and people
come to buy them directly. In Evanston, Illinois, where I live, during
the summer and fall there is a big farmers market that is held every
Saturday in a parking lot downtown where 20-50 farmers have booths
selling all sorts of fruits, vegetables, legumes, plants, and some
crafts.
