Wait, I'm not saying that Russia is evil for spying on us. Nope.
Here's the way I see it. An American spying for the Russians would be
evil. An American spying for the Americans would be good. A Russian
spying for the Russians would be neutral. A Russian spying for the
Americans would be neutral. A Russian spying for the Soviets would be
evil, and a Russian spying against the Soviets would be good.
I see current Russia as just another run-of-the-mill screwed up
country, no worse than a couple dozen others. But the Soviet Union was
a different story, I'd put it in there with Nazi Germany or Imperial
Japan or Genghiz Khan's Hordes as an active force for evil. And I
would put America's current government--along with the governments of
Canada, Britain, the Netherlands, Autralia, Belgium, Norway, etc
etc--as forces for good.
If he had been selling secrets to the Belgians it would be different,
although we keep secrets from the Belgians they are pretty much OK even
if they don't speak english.
Summary of the Summary: Constitutional republican capitalistic
democracy GOOD. Floundering, not-terrible, but at least people don't
get shot very often semi-stable country NEUTRAL. Totalitarian
militaristic genocidal dictatorship BAD.
