I felt it here in Portland. When I heard that it was centered in Seattle, I
got a little worried, since it was pretty strong here. I work in an old
Montgomery Ward warehouse that has been converted to a office building. It
is about 70 years old. It was creaking a bit. I was on the 6th floor, and
the building was definitely swaying.
We have a view of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Hood, and we were
able to check the volcano's to make sure none of them were going off.
What was funny was that two people I was near at the time, recently moved
from San Jose/San Fran, and they only comment they made was "We left
California to get away from the quakes". The third person was giving
play-by-play on the types of motions we where experiencing, and classifying
the type of waveform ("I think that was a P-Wave!"). I was scared, being so
damn high in an old creaky building, thinking in my mind about the recent
Indian earthquakes that trapped and killed tens of thousands.
The Californian's in my office estimate it to be about 4-5 on the Scale here
in Portland.
Within a minute of the earthquake, we were hitting the web, looking for the
first news site to report the quake. Reuter's won, at about 9 minutes after
the quake. I found it interesting that such big news could translate so
quickly from the real world to the Internet.
And you know what! The first thing I thought of after it happened was to
write to the list and let everyone know. I drafted something, but then
decided not to send it after all. I left the news reporting to any survivors
in Seattle.
