One of my friends came across this in the last week:
http://test3.thespark.com/gendertest/gender.cgi
So far, our local sample of 5 women and 1 man has only a 33% accuracy
rate. (3 women, including myself, came up as men; the 1 man came up as a
woman; the remaining 2 women came up as women.) Once the test is over and
they tell you what they think your gender is, there's a form for feedback
-- did they get it right or not? Once you've submitted that, the next
page you get to tells you how many people have taken the test, and that
more testees will make the test more accurate.
Since more men than women seem to participate here, I figured that this
would be a good place to post the URL, as only 43% of the test-takers were
male. (But I'd also be interested in how many women who associate with
male SF fans come up with an erroneous result.) Also, Dan had a pretty
good idea as to what sort of software they're using, and he declared that
the sample size was too low so far. (If anyone else gets to the end of it
and comes to the same conclusion independently, can I *please* have an
explanation, at least as to what sort of software is being used? If not,
I'll bug Dan about it sometime after my mother leaves on Wednesday....)
Also, it might be amusing to see how accurate the test is for those on
this list that participate. I don't want to see 50 messages in the next
48 hours to the list simply declaring if the test was right or wrong, but
I'd be happy to get 50 (or more) messages to my own personal inbox letting
me know the accuracy of results, and then I could just post a general
statement of accuracy. (This would use less bandwidth....) If anyone's
just reading this on the web and isn't subscribed, you may not be able to
see what my e-mail address is, but if you attempt to post your results to
the list, I'll be 1 of just 2 people besides you getting the error message
containing the original message, and the data will get to me that way.
:) (But I'm hoping not to get buried in an avalance of 1000 error
messages with info that way....)
