For years now, I've been wondering about the merits of the BET
channel. I fail to see how skin color even vaguely connects to
entertainment preferences. Even more disturbing is that the
channel seems to show almost nothing but Rap and R&B videos.
Now, I haven't checked with any Black people to get their opinion,
but I know I would be terribly insulted if society expected me to
enjoy the crap they air on MTV, just because it's "White Music" or
"White Entertainment." Likewise, despite the fact my mother is
Puerto Rican, I can say with almost complete confidence that there
is almost no value in the endless talk shows and bad dance videos
of the Spanish speaking network I get here (Univision).
As an individual, I make NO claims to kinship with white or
hispanic society beyond genetics.
The sad fact of the matter is, just because it's aimed at and
marketed by a particular group of people, it doesn't follow that it
can't be completely and totally devoid of any real value.
