I was surprised by how good the Toyota Echo looks next to the Prius. The
Prius' 41mpg average versus the Echo's 38mpg comes to a difference of
less than 200 gallons of gas over 100,000 miles of driving. Since the
Prius costs $6000 more than the Echo, the fuel savings can only offset
the price difference if gas costs more than $30 per gallon!!!
So, the reason to buy the Prius is not really immediate savings to the
buyer. The real reason would be to support the development of better
HEVs. And the Prius also has very low emissions, which is good (SULEV).
