I drive my car a lot of miles a year, so I always reserve judgment on
individual SUV owners who may drive it far less and hence have less
environmental impact. Also, there are situations where one does indeede
need 4x4 or some other feature only sUVs have. However, I am totally
against buying 4x4s for status symbols when they never leave the pavement
or go on snow/ice. I am especially against buying them (primarily) for
"safetY" since it is only their sheer size that gives you that advantage,
which means you protect yourself by creaming somebody else. That's selfish
and rotten.

Also, if you are commuting *solo* in a nine passenger monstrosity, you
should seriously think about starting a carpool. Or buy a second car for
commuting. The auto industry makes so much profit off the biggest,
fanciest trucks that if you bought a really loaded Suburban they could
practically give you a little Metro for free. Tow it home!
