Cindy and I spent last week on Isla Mujeres, off Cancun, Mexico, where,
among other delights, we had a dolphin encounter. Not wild dolphins, I'm
afraid, but trained ones... but it sure was fun to be in the water with
them. I'm really amazed at how friendly they are, and their gymnastic
abilities, so to speak. They do this thing where you float in the water,
face-down, in the "Superman" position (hands forward). You point your toes
down. Two dolphins come from behind you, stick their noses (beaks?) under
your feet and push you up out of the water. Without any real effort on your
part, they push you almost completely out of the water and for about 30 feet
or so. I'll post pictures on my web site one of these days (when taxes,
etc., are done). It's amazing that they can do this at all, and as a team
of two! I'd seen it done in shows at Marine World, but I figured the people
they were pushing through the water had some training and experience... but
the dolphins were doing all the work for us, including keeping us balanced.
It's sort of like water-skiing without a boat.

Uplift 'em now, I say!

Nick
